  • How does having access to safe water, food, health care and education contribute to the overall quality of life for a country?
  • How can I use a wiki to display my work and learn from the work of others?
  • How can I use Citation Machine to create a properly formatted bibliography?

Part 1: Research (Individual)

Task:

You are to create a wiki page about ONE country in either Africa or Asia. It must include the following information:

a) Your name on the top of the page

b) Map of your country that shows major cities and bodies of water and geographic features

c) Population (how many, what types)

d) Culture - language(s) spoken, food, clothing, entertainment, religion, famous people

e) Major industries/ ways they make money

f) Government in power

g) Look at the poverty rate of your county. What needs are not being met (food, education, water health). Why are these issues there?

h) What UNESCO groups or other Aid organizations are helping out

i) Interesting facts (at least 5)

j) Pictures of the country's flag, land, people, and culture.

k) Based on the information you have found, list three reasons why someone would want to visit your country (the country’s assets) and three reasons why someone might not want to visit your country (the country’s challenges).

k) Bibliography

Resources:

You must use at least one print resource (i.e. book, encyclopedia), one database resource (i.e. Expert Space, Worldbook Online), and any number of Internet sites. Use the Citation Machine found on the library page under “Citation Sites” to create your bibliography.

Part 2: So What? (Small Groups)

Task:

a) Working in small groups assigned by the teacher, each member is to share his/her three reasons why someone would want to visit his/her country. Next, each member is to share his/her two reasons why someone might not want to visit his/her country.

b) Decide as a group, one country you would like to visit the most and one country you would like to visit the least. Write this information on the wiki page created by your team's leader. On this same page, list at least five reasons you choose this country and two reasons why you choose the country you'd least like to visit.

Part 3: What Next? (Large Group/Individual)

Task:

a) As a class, decide which country we’d most like to visit on a field trip.

b) On your individual wiki page, write a short paragraph to your teacher trying to convince him/her to take you to this country for your next school field trip. To be convincing, be sure to list some of the great assets of the country found on the wiki.
